we're not gonna butter it up for you. the streets in pana are not smoothe and silky like they were in phili in 2000. they're more like the cobblestone section on the back side of the course in copenhagen in 2001. i think ill be riding my cross bike. this will give me enough speed on the few fully paved roads, great traction on the pave, and ill be flying over the cobbles.
what bike are you bringing?

Bega asked?
"what bike are you bringing?"Yo Bega i don't know what bike to take so perhaps i need some advice. My options are1. 29er single speed. It would require new bits like thinner, slicker tyres, bigger chain ring and smaller cog etc.)2. Kona Paddy Wagon work bike with 30C cyclocross tyres (or bigger but they might not fit)Waddayareckon mate?... The 29er is a bit of a pig to box up and travel with.
I was wondering about bike
I was wondering about bike choice, which is why I haven't registered for La Ocho. That is going to be dirt right? But is it going to be smooth? Is it a fixed only event? I was thinking about taking my cross-country mtb with slicks, but figured there'd be no point signing up for La Ocho if so.
begas cross bike...
get rid of that aluminum fork then bega, i dont care how wide your tires are, on those cobbles your gonna needs some dampening.
im thinking road bike with 25s, maybe 28s if they can fit.
Photos of the course, or at
Photos of the course, or at least the streets it will be on, will be posted after we come back from our January 15th meeting with the city of Panajachel. You can decide better what to ride then. I still predict a brakeless track bike will win it all.
As for La Ocho, it will be on dirt, like a BMX or motorcross race. You will probably want some tread, especially for the turns, but you can ride whatever you want. However, we are looking in to the possibility of using a set of matching bikes (sort of like the Little 500 in Indianapolis) to eliminate the need to jeopardize you Sunday race bike you brought for CMWC, and ensure all the bikes are appropriate for the track.
